Second Trouble

Posted on Fri May 19th, 2017 @ 6:20pm by Captain Jack Colburn & Crewman Peri Rolotea & Lieutenant Evlyn Madec & Lieutenant Mirok & Lieutenant Genevieve Oliver M.D., Ph.D.

Mission: Episode 1: The Emperor's Throne
Location: USS Bernard
Timeline: MD4 - 1440 Hours

Crewman Peri headed straight down to the runabout once she had been assigned to the away team. The thought of flying a shuttle through a very secure area of Klingon space didn't fill her with joy if she was completely honest with herself, especially with the Counselor escorting their Klingon guests to the runabout to be taken back to their people. She had almost finished her preflight checks when she heard the runabout doors slide open.

Mirok entered the runabout with the last two rifles, locking them into the locker in the back. "Now, lets hope we don't need these."

"You and me both," Lieutenant Madec said as she followed Mirok inside. "Peri, are we ready to go?" she called out to the front of the runabout.

"Aye, sir. All systems in the green." The Crewman replied. "Just waiting for our guests to arrive."

Genevieve arrived, their guests walking side-by-side. "Here we are," Oliver greeted.

"Thank you, Lieutenant." Commander Jopass said, the pain evident on his face as he tried to be civil with the Counselor. Both he and Kel'ino boarded the Runabout through the open hatch. Once inside they noticed the officers that they had met on their own vessel. "Where are you taking us?" Kel'ino asked, as he took one of the free seats at the rear of the runabout's auxiliary controls consoles.

"To Ty'Gokor," Evlyn answered him. "General D'jimpok requested it."

Mirok remained standing near the back, chewing at his lower lip. There was something that was gnawing at him in back of his mind, "we are gonna make them mad..." he muttered, "this might not end well."

"We'll be fine, you heard the General. He assures our protection within the defence grid." Peri replied with a smile.

Mirok looked around, "under his terms, which said a shuttle with two of our crew and his officers. This is a runabout of probably twice the size with one more crewmember, and even though he assured our protection, he could very well see this as an insult of his intelligence or honor--or both."

"The General is an honourable man, he 'will' keep to his word. Even if Starfleet breaks with his protocol." Kel'ino said.

"I'm just paranoid is all, I guess." Mirok said, seeming much like the Romulans.

Responding to the general unease within the group, a feeling Genevieve couldn't deny in herself, she offered, "There's nothing wrong with remaining alert for the unexpected while also keeping an open mind."

While not as worried about the hornet's nest they might be entering, Evlyn did have to agree with Mirok. She wasn't too thrilled that the Commander had chosen to circumvent the Klingons' wishes in this retrieval operation. Hopefully they'd come out of it mostly unscathed. Evlyn looked back to Genevieve. "Counselor, we'll be able to take it from here. Thanks for bringing the Klingons to us."

"Of course," Genevieve responded politely. "I was happy to be of assistance."

Once the Counselor disembarked from the runabout, Evlyn activated the comm. "Bernard to bridge. We're ready to go."

"You are clear to disembark, Bernard. Good luck." Came the Commander's voice over the comm.

I'll take all the luck that I can get my hands on, Evlyn thought to herself. She took a deep breath and looked over to the pilot's seat. "Peri, take us out."

"Aye, sir. Opening shuttle bay doors." Peri said as she operated her console. Open space began to spill into view as the shuttle bay doors opened slowly. "Engaging thrusters." She said a few moments after the doors had fully opened. The Bernard slipped through the shuttle bay forcefield and into open space. "Setting course of Ty'Gokor, full impulse."

Mirok forced himself to stay still: otherwise his nerves were gonna be the reason they got attacked.

"What's our ETA?" Madec asked the crewman.

Peri looked at her readout before replying, "We're 15 minutes away from Ty'Gokor's..." an alarm suddenly went off at her console. "Sir! I'm detecting a Bird of Prey decloaking off our starboard aft!"

Mirok turned to the nearest console and logged in, growling. "Dammit, didn't I say this would happen?"

He had. This wasn't unexpected. Even so, they needed to find out what this ship wanted. Evlyn input a few commands into her console to activate the runabout's comm system. "Klingon Bird of Prey, this is the Federation Runabout Bernard on a diplomatic mission to Ty'Gokor with the permission of Chancellor Martok. Please state your intentions."

"Its no use, sir, they're jamming the comm frequencies." Peri called out. "10 seconds until they're in weapons range!"

"Raise shields and take us back to the Kumari," Madec ordered seeing as they'd only just left. They wouldn't be far away.

"They're closing on us, I don't think we'll be getting back." Mirok said, turning towards the others. "I didn't think I'd go out like this."

"I don't plan on dying just yet, Lieutenant." Peri said as she worked her console. "Orders, Lieutenant Madec?"

"They could have blown us to bits by now and they haven't which means that they likely want us alive," Madec told them. "Make sure that you're all armed. Peri, evasive maneuvers. Hopefully our erratic movement will get the Commander's attention before it's too late."

"Aye sir." Peri replied as she began evasive maneuvers. "They're still on us and gaining. "Sir!, I'm picking up another bird of prey decloaking near the Kumari."

"Well that will keep the ship busy," Evlyn said with a sigh. "Break for the asteroid belt. Maybe we can lose the Klingons in there."

"Aye, sir." Said Peri as she adjusted the Runabouts course. A violent volley of Klingon weapons impacted the runabouts shields. "Port thrusters are down!"

Mirok pressed a few commands into his makeshift tactical panel. "We're not going to be able to outrun them! Not with no port thrusters!"

Before Peri could say anything else the runabout was hit with another burst of disruptor fire. Luckily, Peri was able to keep the whole barrage from impacting the ship. "Damn! They hit the starboard nacelle, we're leaking plasma. We won't survive another hit!"

"Dammit! We have to get back to the ship!" Mirok said, standing up. "We might be able to attempt a long range transport back, but its too risky under fire." He turned towards the main screen as the Negh'Var decloaked and took a hit for them.

"Bortas to Federation Runabout. Prepare for transport."

"Just in the nick of time," Evlyn commented. She looked back to the others. "Get on the transporter pad. I'll try to buy the Bortas some time to get us out of here."

"Sir, you go, I'll continue evasive maneuvers!" Peri said not liking the thought of leaving a commanding officer in danger.

"There's no time to argue, Crewman! Go, before we're all lost." To prevent Rolotea from arguing further, Evlyn transferred helm control to her station.

The crewman sighed in frustration as she left her position and headed for transporter pad. "Aye, sir."

As much as he disliked it, Mirok got up and headed to the pad as well, "may the Elements watch over you, Lieutenant." He said to Madec as he did so.

Evlyn nodded. Even though their situation was dire, she had every intention of getting out of this one alive. She winced as the console that was next to the crewman's seat exploded in a flurry of sparks. They needed to get to safety now! The Lieutenant activated the comm. "Madec to Bortas, I have four ready to be beamed over to your ship."

"We have a lock." Came the Klingon transporters operator over the comm. "Energizing." A orange hue took hold of the four waiting to transport, within moments they were gone. "Runabout, we have them. Waiting for your signal."

"I'm on it," Evlyn acknowledged. She programmed the computer to carry out another series of evasive maneuvers before leaving her seat for the transporter. She then tapped her combadge. "Madec to Bortas. I'm ready. Get me out of here."

"Energizing." Said the Klingon transporter operator, just as the attacking Bird of Prey came in for another pass. The orange transporter beam consumed the Chief of Operations just as the runabout exploded....
