Mission: Episode 1: The Emperor's Throne
Location: T'Rhe's Quarters
Timeline: MD4 - 0000 Hours

It wasn't generally the done thing, sneaking to a female junior officers quarters but Jack couldn't sleep. His conversation with Mirok was still going round his head. Guilt was his main reason for his insomnia and he also needed help to sort out the mess he had helped to create.

The Intelligence game could be a messy one, which Jack knew all to well, but he didn't want to be making waves during the first few weeks of his new command. Hence why he now stood outside his Chief Intelligence and Strategic Operations Officers quarters waiting for permission to enter.

T'Rhe was roused from sleep by the door chime. "Who in blazes is calling at this time of night. Better not be that damned Romulan," she muttered, at least in as close a translation as Cardassian to Standard can be rendered. (The literal translation would be much more colorful and probably a bit inappropriate). Pulling on a robe, she went to the door. Fortunately, Jonathan hadn't heard the door chime--thank God for his deep sleeping tendencies this time.

She opened the door to find Commander Colburn on the other side. "Commander... What can I do for you? If you're looking for a bit of..." She broke off at the expression on his face.

Jack had a puzzled look on his face before he realised what the Lieutenant was saying. "Oh no!" He said shaking his head. "I have a matter which needs to be discussed with you, urgently."

"Of course. Come in. Can I get you anything," responded T'Rhe, moving to the replicator.

The Commander held up his hand, "Nothing for me, thank you. I'm sorry for disturbing you at this late hour."

"Its all right--duty knows no timeclock, as they say. Tea, hot, mint with a pinch of redleaf and cinnamon." The replicator hummed and she took her tea from the dispenser. Going to one of the chairs, she sat. "So, what can I do for you, Commander?"

"I had a little chat with Lieutenant Mirok earlier. He seemed very on edge, when I asked him about what was on his mind he became very angry." Jack said as he followed the Lieutenant and took a seat opposite her. "After I managed to calm him down he finally told me what had been bothering him. He's been in contact with his father again and given some very sensitive information about some of Starfleets hierarchy." He said as he produced a PADD from his pocket and passed it to T'Rhe.

"Hmmm," said T'Rhe, taking a fortifying sip of her tea and looking over the information. "Are you sure I should have this, Sir? In the wrong hands..."

"The Romulans have it." Jack said with a shrug of his shoulders. "This isn't Lieutenant Mirok's fault. I ordered him to push his father for more information. I need to inform Starfleet Intelligence but want to keep Mirok's name out of the report for obvious reasons."

"Of course... Would you like to help with that report, Sir? And what do we do about the Romulans having this, and Mirok? Again, if he becomes compromised..." She let the sentence trail off, unsure how to continue.

"Your assistance will be greatly appreciated. I don't know why the Romulans would request this information. Probably just to keep their own records up to date. Mirok is having difficulties with this as you can imagine. I've asked for him to hand over his personal beacon so this doesn't happen again. I think we've gain enough information to move forward at a later date."

T'Rhe considered a moment. "So, what do you want me to do? You wouldn't be here if you didn't have something for me"

"I need a convincing story as why the Romulans have this information and how we came across it." Colburn replied simply.

She nodded. "It'll be done. Technically, we're not lying to Intelligence, but we are being deceptive, both with our own people and the Romulans. To quote someone I met once, "Deception is a skill like any other, and if you want to maintain a level of excellence, you have to practice constantly."

Jack couldn't help but smile. "I like your way of thinking, any ideas on how to proceed?"

T'Rhe took another sip of her tea. "I'll look over this and get back to you. Hopefully I'll have something for you by 08:00, but I do need some sleep at some point." She chuckled a little.

"Thank you, Lieutenant. I'll let you get some rest." The Commander said as he rose to his feet and moved towards the door.

T'Rhe sat up straighter, saluted the commander, then got back to her PADD. It was going to be a process, but she would do her best.
